One of the most common concerns in the natural community is how to combat thinning edges. Although it may not be something that everyone struggles with, it is something that everyone thinks about and wants to stay away from. Whether you’re currently struggling with repairing damaged edges or if you’re looking for a way to avoid the problem from happening in the future, here are a few tips to keep your hairline as healthy as possible.
Give yourself scalp massages regularly.
Not only do scalp massages feel great, they also stimulate hair growth and repair follicles. Place extra focus on the areas that are damaged or thinning by rubbing the oil on them. Avoid styles that create tension on your hair or cause you to over manipulate your edges for awhile.
Slaying your edges and wearing some of your favorite protective styles may have to take a back seat until you re-strengthen your edges. Styles like braids, weaves, wigs, and even tight ponytails can have a major effect on the health of your hairline. Try taking a break from those sorts of styles while trying to regrow your edges.
Limit your wear of hats.
Limiting or completely eliminating the use of hats in your routine may seem difficult, but your edges will thank you in the long run. Hats and even headbands can damage your fragile hairline by catching onto your hair and pulling it. Likewise, the oils can get trapped at the root and leave your ends dry creating all-around hair breakage. If you do decide to wear a hat or headband, however, be sure it’s satin lined.
Add extra strength to your edges by deep conditioning regularly.

Consider your nightly routine.
If you’ve been one to throw caution to the wind when it comes to your hair at night, that could be the cause of your thinning edges. To help combat your issue, be sure to sleep with your hair tied in a silk/satin scarf or bonnet or choose to sleep on a satin pillowcase to avoid breakage.
And of course, moisturize.
